CRICHIE BUSINESS CENTRE, INVERURIE

Huntly - Peregrine WildWatch
An environmental and educational wildlife centre with CCTV. Free to the public and educational groups. Encourages interaction with local schools/groups designing games, trail guides, supporting environmental and enterprise issues within their curriculum. A local primary school designed the trail guide as an enterprise project raising monies for their school. Support local community by encouraging participation on site and local tourism.

Fraserburgh Heritage Society Recycling 2005 Initiative
An interactive display drawing attention to the possibilities for recycling. The hands-on exhibit is designed to inform visitors of every age. Built last winter, the display designed to raise awareness of recycling possibilities has proved particularly attractive to children. The frame of the display was made from scrapped tables, the mechanism from old Meccano. The display is a logical follow-on to the hands-on display created last year on Beach Pollution.

Stonehaven Horizon Project
The Horizon Group aims to enhance and improve the environs of Stonehaven. This year the group created a wildflower meadow in part of a neglected grassy area bordering walkways situated on Stonehaven Bay. Advice was taken on wildflowers suitable for a coastal environment which would also attract insects and butterflies. Large boulders and rocks were transported from a nearby quarry to help stabilise the area and provide shelter for the plants. Over 500 wildflowers were planted and it is hoped they will self seed. In 2006 intention is to extend the meadow to areas adjoining this years project.

Traves - Haddo House Estate
Establishment of red squirrel conservation project and also planting native trees to replace exotic conifer stands.

Midmar - Dr Wendy Seel, North Tillydaff
Creation of areas for wildlife at North Tillydaff part of a neighbouring farm was purchased to pre-empt use as a waste disposal site, this has now been planted under native woodland.

Marr Area Partnership
The Marr Area Partnership (MAP) works with diverse communities of Marr to encourage and enable sustainable development of their economic, environmental and social future by obtaining grant funding for community groups, a bi monthly E-newsletter and providing advice and facilitation

Longside - Jill Chandler, Greenbrae farmhiuse B&B
Establishment of bird feeding stations, Nest boxes, bat boxes and areas for small mammals, particularly over winter, around the garden.
Active recycling and composting programme in place with energy saving light bulbs being used wherever possible.
Regular surveys carried out for the British Trust for Ornithology and the R.S.P.B. advice given to visitors on watching wildlife in a responsible manner

Johnshaven - Allen Smith
Raising community awareness of the potential adverse effects of disposing large volumes of inadequately treated sewage effluent to sea in areas with little tidal flow. Establishing links with other communities along the coastline in an endeavour to bring a co-ordinated approach to the statutory bodies responsible for managing our waste and water systems. Johnshaven community want a treatment works but want something which will be less environmentally damaging. Allen has been instrumental in galvanising the village to resist current proposals presented by Scottish Water and SEPA.

Hillside Indicated Criteria 1

Active members of British Divers Marine Life Rescue operating between Inverbervie and Easthaven. attending callouts wherever needed. The group specialises in rescuing sick and injured seal pups but are trained to refloat stranded cetaceans. Also dedicated beach cleaners who have adopted Kinaber as their nominated beach through Marine Conservation Society. We have several seal pups which have been uplifted as rescue cases. They have been through rehab & gone on to be released. Many of these would have died if not spotted by the nominees.

Strichen Community Park Company
Restoration of a brown field cement works site to create a recreational area on the edge of the village. Drystane dykes have been stabilised and repaired, a path network has been established, lake has been restored and strategically fenced to provide safe areas for water fowl which have established communities. Bird boxes, bat boxes and hedgehog woodpiles have been positioned around the park. Viewpoints and picnic areas have been established with seats and tables built from recycled wood.
