FYVIE PRIMARY SCHOOL, FYVIE

PRESENTED BY JANE McGRAW OF FYVIE PRIMARY SCHOOL

BRAESIDE PRIMARY SCHOOL - AUCHNAGATT
Have developed a wildlife garden in the school grounds and built bat and bird boxes to put in it. They have fitted the development of the wildlife garden into their curriculum at all stages and brought the outdoors into the school by creating pictures and hangings in the school.
They planted a number of native trees for the millennium and adopted a bakers dozen of Wych Elm. They used the Internet to gather a lot of the information for their project and have developed their own website.

ABERDEENSHIRE COUNCIL – COMPOSTING PLANT
Waste disposal is a problem we all should be considering more than we do. Aberdeenshire Council has built 2 composting plants, one at Inverboyndlie near Banff and one at Kirkhill near Mintlaw to attempt to reduce the amount of waste going to landfill. The plant separates organic materials from non-organics and processes it into low-grade compost which, at the moment is being used to restore landfill sites.

RAYNE NORTH PRIMARY SCHOOL
Has encouraged awareness of the need for reduce, reuse and recycling the waste that we produce. The school put together a fashion show with all the clothes made from waste. Everything from fertiliser bags to crisp bags to old newspapers and cardboard to emphasise the message that we throw too much away. They also researched each of the materials and found out how much was produced what it was used for and whether or not they biodegrade. They have produced a web site to pass on the information they gathered.

BUCHAN COUNTRYSIDE LTD.
Have brought together the communities of Lonmay, Memsie and Rathen to carry out a research project to find out just how little we need to throw out. Each household has a composter and bins for other recyclable materials. They collect all plastics, metals, papers and cardboard and glass, which are put in, recycle bins. The children at the local school are all involved and have a ‘Beastie Club’ where they undertake environmental activities. The children can then keep their parents enthusiasm going by networking with other participants.

MAVIS WAINMAN – KEMNAY
Mavis has worked hard for the environment for many years. She serves on the Forum and is our spokesperson for Waste Minimisation and is our representative on the Blackdog Environmentally Friendly Houses project. At home her garden is full of organic vegetables and she has a range of composters at different stages of production
