THAINSTONE HOUSE INVERURIE

PRESENTED BY COUNCILLOR ALISON McINNES

WATERS OF PHILORTH LOCAL NATURE RESERVE, FRASERBURGH
A superb area of the coast close to Fraserburgh has been conserved for future generations through the creation of this local nature reserve. The area encompasses a tidal river, adjacent dunes and foreshore, all extremely valuable wildlife habitats and important public access

WOOD RECYCLABILITY, PITMEDDEN
A very innovative scheme that was begun 18 months ago to address the problem of re-using timber, and providing work training for disabled people. The company takes delivery of wooden pallets, cable drums and other sources of used wood, and produce chips from the broken material and softwood timber from the recoverable material.

THE GREEN GROCER, INVERURIE
Once a small greengrocers shop, the premises were taken over and converted into an outlet for a variety of environmental friendly goods. Organic vegetables, washing powder and local produce are all available. The shop not only promotes good environmental practice but it also offers an outlet for local growers

Mr & Mrs GIBSON, AUCHLETHEN FARM, HATTON
A wonderful example of two people’s full commitment to caring for and improving the environment around them. Auchlethen has been transformed from a working farm into an embryo woodland of some 30 hectares, through the dedication of Mr. Mrs Gibson. There is also a fine pond that acts as a refuge for injured swans, and the area as a whole now attracts a wide variety of local wildlife.

AUCHTERELLON SCHOOL, ELLON
Many schools today are creating wildlife areas in their school grounds. Auchterellon is a wonderful example of whole school involvement and commitment. Faced with courtyards paved with concrete they have imported top soil, gravel for paths, timber, plants and much more, and set about transforming the area into an attractive site that has great environmental benefit for the school and its pupils.

AMERADA HESS – GROUNDS FOR LEARNING - ABERDEEN
This large oil company has for the past two years funded a project that supports the improvement of school grounds. Run jointly with Grounds for Learning, the School Grounds Improvement Scheme is specifically for schools in Aberdeenshire and Aberdeen City, and grants of up to £1000 are available to carry out improvement work.

BALLATER ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION CENTRE - BALLATER
For many years this converted school building in the middle of Ballater has provided a much needed outdoor centre approach to environmental education. It is both an indoor facility and an outdoor centre where people of all ages and abilities can come for a day or a week to learn about and experience the wonderful environment of upper Deeside.
