THAINSTONE HOUSE INVERURIE
PRESENTED BY MARK STEPHEN
ABERDEENSHIRE COUNCIL - ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH
For their establishment of an aluminium can recycling centre, this well deserved award follows hard on the heels of a national award. The council have started up a ‘buy- back’ scheme for aluminium cans, based in Inverurie. Not only does this scheme help reduce waste, it recycles aluminium, and provides funds for local community groups, schools and others.
MR & MRS ROBERTSON, CORSEHILL, CUMINESTOWN
This project is an example of what can be done to help wildlife and the environment. Mr and Mrs Robertson have built a wildlife pond, planted hedges, trees and much more on their property. They encourage local school children to use the areas for environmental studies.
LIZA IRELAND - THE GREEN SCHOOL HUNTLY
What chance for the future if the next generation are not made fully aware of how precious our environment is? Well the Green School is setting about doing just that. A superb and innovative idea turned into reality at Huntly, as pupils are taught to be more aware of the way we treat our precious planet.
BUCHAN COUNTRYSIDE GROUP
This long established voluntary group has contributed significantly to the well being and enhancement of the environment in Buchan and beyond. Through their active programme of ‘hands-on’ work to create paths, plant trees and much more, they have made the area a better place. They have a programme of educating young people about environmental matters.
ROYAL LOCHNAGAR DISTILLERY
It is always good to see industry playing their part in the care of the environment and this distillery at Crathie on Deeside have done just that. A fine initiative on the part of the firm has seen the establishment of a nature reserve next to the distillery. Breeding birds are being encouraged by the provision of nesting boxes made from recycled timber.
MR. GORDON MORRIS - PORTLETHEN
It is good to recognise the efforts of individuals and this year the Forum are delighted to have Mr. Gordon Morris from Portlethen among the award winners. Mr Morris has for many years worked away quietly giving up his time voluntarily to the care of the environment. A stalwart member of the Scottish Wildlife Trust he is the main driving force behind the Drums tree nursery, and has recently established the Portlethen Tree Group.
BOYNDIE HORTICULTURAL PROJECT - BOYNDIE CENTRE
Banff day care centre has been organising this project for a number of years. At the Boyndie Centre, vegetables are grown in a walled garden, and plants raised in the greenhouse are sold to make the project self sufficient. In the grounds the outside they have created ponds, built footpaths, planted trees and made the area into something special for all.
BANFF ENVIRONMENTAL ACTION TEAM - ( B.E.A.T. )
Waste card, plastics and Aluminium are all being collected for recycling by the team that now have their base on an industrial estate in Macduff. The project provides training for people with disabilities, and helps them gain useful employment. Begun six years ago it continues to grow, now accounting for an amazing 30 tons of cardboard alone each month, collected from Banff and Macduff.
AUCHENBLAE PARKS COMMITTEE - AUCHENBLAE
Way down in the Mearns, the Auchenblae Parks Committee have worked hard to improve the local environment for all. During the past winter they organised the planting of over 600 trees, all locally native species, in and around the village. A great effort that will provide shelter, habitats for wildlife and give pleasure to people, both locals and visitors alike.
