THAINSTONE HOUSE INVERURIE
PRESENTED BY ABERDEENSHIRE COUNCIL CONVENER Dr COLIN MILLAR
PETER BALSTON, BRAESIDE FARM, NEW BYTH
Peter has made a shining example of how a farm can help wildlife and the environment. As well as planting thousands of trees, he has created a wild flower meadow now full of beautiful ancient flowers. This in turn provides a crop of organic hay.
INVERURIE ACADEMY ENVIRONMENT GROUP/MARIA MARSDEN
An enthusiastic group of pupils have created a wildlife area on the site of a former garden, that has for many years been unused. The group built a pond, planted trees and installed composting bins to utilise waste material from the area.
MRS. ELIZABETH BACON, FUTTIE PARK, CORSE, LUMPHANAN
Mrs. Bacon and members of her family have transformed the area about their old farmhouse into a superb site for wildlife. Years of hard work have gone into tree planting with oak, ash, hazel and many more species being used, and they have also created a fine pond.
NEWBURGH YOUTH CLUB - GRIZZLY CHALLENGE PROJECT
A group of young people from the village of Newburgh entered the BP Grizzly Challenge in 1995. They transformed an area of land in the village into the Coull Walkway, building paths, making flower beds and providing seats for the villagers. They provided access for the disabled and those with pushchairs and young children.
CS ENVIRONMENT - THE GREEN DIARY
Environmental issues of the day, events, group profiles and much more are included in the publication produced monthly by CSV in Aberdeen. A group of dedicated people produce the diary that is provided free to anyone in Aberdeenshire.
MIKE HARRIS - SOUTH SKELMONAE CROFT, STRICHEN
Mike Harris has devoted himself to the care and well being of Aberdeenshire’s badgers. He has done more than anyone to increase public awareness of the problems faced by this lovely animal. He carries out surveys of badger habitats and records the number of road casualties annually, highlighting this worrying problem.
BENNACHIE CENTRE - TRUSTEES
For many years a group of dedicated people, lead by James McKay a stalwart Baillie of Bennachie and champion of ‘Aberdeenshire’s hill ‘, have worked tirelessly to create a centre for the site. Their perseverance has been rewarded with the newly opened Bennachie centre.
