Aberdeenshire encompasses a range of wildlife habitats of unsurpassed variety, from the sea to the tops of the highest mountain range in Scotland. Herds of red deer roam the high tops whilst huge colonies of birds breed on the sea cliffs. In between these extremes are heather moorland, freshwater loch and semi-natural woodland, all criss-crossed by the great rivers of the area.
Interspersed with the wildlife habitats is the man made landscape. A patchwork of fields and villages, planted woods and towns, each joined to its neighbour by a web of bums, roads, hedges and dykes. The final piece of this environmental jigsaw is an important one; the people. Those who live, work and play in Aberdeenshire, some of whom try to ensure that the pieces of the jigsaw are not lost for this and future generations.
It is these people who work to ensure that the precious environment is maintained and enhanced for all forms of life, that the Green Butterfly Award aims to recognise.
If you know of an individual, group or organisation that you think merits a Green Butterfly Award, why not nominate them? The 2012 form will be available some time in the New Year.
